But what you didn’t know was that witch hazel has a higher alcohol content than most other astringents available in the market today. This is enough to dehydrate your skin rapidly and to cause it to become dry and even flake out. Using lemon for fairer skin Lemon extract is the go to home remedy when you want to get instant shade reduction along with depigmentation and de-tanning. An old wives recipe, the procedure involves application of freshly squeezed lemon juice on the area that you want to de-tan and where you want a lighter skin colour. But what you didn’t realise is that pure lemon juice is acidic, very acidic, and has a pH of 2. This is enough to cause skin damage and chemical burns if used for a time that is more than is recommended. The Mayo face mask Recently some tips have been doing rounds on the internet about the mayo face mask. Mayo as in mayonnaise! Now, while we can verify that mayonnaise is an excellent remedy for dull, dry hair. We wouldn’t say that about its effects on skin. See, mayonnaise is very oily (probably why your dietician took it off your diet chart) and using mayo on your face can not only lead to excess oil accumulation in your skin, it can also clog your pores real nice and voila! You have and outbreak of pimples to deal with now. Our advice; Steer clear of this home remedy. Egg face mask Eggs are a gentle and rich source of protein. Your skin needs protein, you do the math. Most salons, in fact, have enriching facials that involve egg whites in some form or the other. Egg is in no way caustic or chemically degenerative for your skin. What then, can make this home remedy worth a mention on this list? Well, raw egg contains salmonella (which is a kind of not so nice bacteria). Salmonella can be cause of severe food poisoning if accidentally ingested while using eggs as a face mask. Apple cider vinegar Apple cider vinegar is used most commonly to mask Body Odour. And it is not harmful for the skin in any way. The thing that is really wrong with using this method to neutralise body odour is the fact that it does not work by removing it, it replaces it with its own pungent smell. Do you really want to smell like apple cider vinegar? Up to you? Cinnamon Cinnamon is a great spice to flavour your sweet buns and fruit cakes with. For years it has been touted as a great exfoliate for your skin. The only problem is, that it is still a spice! Prolonged exposure to cinnamon in absence of a diluting media (like honey) can cause blisters, burns and irritation. Peroxide for wounds Hydrogen peroxide is a go to solution for all minor and major wounds. The liquid works by releasing nascent oxygen in cells and thus clearing out the debris that would have been impossible to clear out otherwise, thus preventing infection. However, if you continue using it more than once, you will find that your wound will just not heal. Baking soda for exfoliation This is the exact opposite of the lemon juice recipe. Baking soda is highly alkaline, your skin has a neutral pH level. You need to steer clear of this unhealthy fad and put your baking soda where it belongs, in your cakes. Toothpaste Toothpaste is great for your pimples, right? Wrong! Well sort of. The thing about toothpaste is that it does get rid of your pimples and zits really fast, but. It leaves a scar where it shouldn’t, you are better off using a medicated face wash or ointment if your skin is prone to pimple outbreaks. It is a pain free procedure Sure, there are Multiple injections involved, but when you compare it with other treatment options for wrinkles, this is a relatively pain free procedure. Moreover, for anxious patients the option of applying a skin numbing cream is also available. This makes the procedure absolutely pain free. 2. Your facial muscles are not completely “paralysed” The word paralyses is used to imply a state of relaxation of the muscles, Muscles gain their normal functionality within a week or two (varies from person to person). In the hands of an experienced dermatologist the muscles would be just relaxed enough to make the wrinkles disappear and the expressions of the face would still be retained. 3. The results are not immediate People believe Botox to be magic, and expect results immediately after the injections. This is not true the results take anywhere between 4-7 (again- varies). 4. But they are long lasting (considerably) The results, however, are long lasting. A single sitting of Botox can relieve you up for up to 4- 6 months from wrinkles and fine lines. 5. Botox is not a permanent solution for wrinkles Yet, Botox is not a permanent solution for wrinkles and you will probably need to get the treatment once every 6-7 months as wrinkles will be back to their normal form after the treatment wears off. However re-treatment is not mandatory. A lot of our clients get botox done only for a special occasion and do not repeat it thereafter. 6. And it is most definitely, not risky. Botox is not risky when administered by a trained medical professional; you just need to ensure that the clinic that you get yours at has the specialization and experience needed to administer the treatment. 7. Preventive Botox. Yes, that’s a thing too- People as young as 24 can consider getting Botox treatment if they experience signs of skin ageing prematurely. Medication Topical Retinoids that are derived from Vitamin A are said to reduce fine lines before they turn into wrinkles. 2. Cosmetic Surgery A host of surgical operations are available for treatment of wrinkles. 3. Dermabrasion This process uses controlled wearing of the upper layers of skin with sandpaper or other mechanical means. 4. Chemical Peels Involves applying a chemical solution to wrinkly areas and will remove the sagging end of the skin. 5. Facelift These are surgical procedures that take considerable time to heal and are not without complications but will last for up to 5 and half years. 6. Olive Oil Olive oil hydrates your skin like few things can. Use this at night.Massage a few drops on your face at night and rinse off in the morning. You will wake up to a noticeably soft and supple skin in the morning. Olive oil is also a rich source of Vitamin B and D groups and also contains Oleic acid and Polyphenol which are great for your skin. 2. Egg Whites Egg whites are a rich source of Vitamin E, separate the yellow from the eggs and whip the whites and apply to your face. Leave for 15 minutes and rinse off. Vitamin E quenches something called free radicals from your body, free radicals cause oxidative damage not just to your skin, but also to all other systems in your body. You can also consider using Vitamin E oil for your skin. 3. Eat right Eating lots of veggies and fruits that are high in mineral content, have lots of Vitamins and have a lot of dietary fiber is great for your skin. A well balanced diet will make sure that your skin gets all the nutrients that it needs and that they get absorbed by your GIT.

To prevent the onset of early fine lines and wrinkles

1. Avoid stress Stress has been known to play an important role in progression of skin ageing. The best way that you can prevent wrinkles is to avoid taking undue stress. The way that this happens is when you take stress, cortisol (a stress hormone) levels increase, flooding your body. Cortisol degrades collagen, leading to loose skin that later gains a wrinkled appearance. 2. Don’t smoke Smoking is the number one environmental factor that will cause premature ageing of the skin. The smoke from cigarettes affects you on multiple levels, smoking causes constriction and blockage of micro vessels that supply your skin healthy, oxygenated blood, thus depriving your skin of the much needed oxygen and nutrients that it needs to repair itself and stay healthy. 3. Stay Hydrated Staying hydrated at all times is going to help your skin retain its natural collagen and will help boost radiance and glow. Drinking enough water throughout the day will lead to better elimination of waste products from your body. These waste products would have otherwise caused damage to your skin that is irreparable and unhealthy. 4. Use the right products Sun exposure is another very important cause of premature ageing; use the right, non-toxic sunscreens to get the best protection for your skin. Products with methyl paraben, for example do more harm to your skin than good. We recommend that you use a sunscreen that is paraben free, even if on the slightly pricy side. Additionally, you can go for an in clinic treatment Botox is a very effective in clinic treatment that is popular because it has fast results and is safe when delivered by an experienced clinician. Mesotherapy is yet another in clinic treatment that will help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. You might even just need prescription medications if your wrinkles are caused by some other underlying cause. Weight loss The procedure has also been called injection lipolysis (lipo-fat, lysis-breakdown). The therapy is especially effective when you want to get rid of fat that will not go away with regular exercise and a proper diet. The procedure involves injection of certain chemicals that target adipocytes (fat cells) which then dissolve and die. It is only through the maintenance of this moisture that we can break the itch-scratch cycle. ITCH-SRATCH CYCLE General care:
  • Use cotton clothes, avoid synthetic materials and especially wool.
  • In winters, the first layer has to be cotton and then a woollen, to avoid direct contact with wool.
  • Keep child’s fingernails filed short.
  • Use regular laundry detergent, but rinse and clean well. No bleach or fabric softener.
  • Wash new clothes before wearing them to remove irritating dyes and fabric finishers.
  • Avoid drying laundry outside during the pollination season.
  • Do not overheat the bedroom.
  • Air the room out in all seasons.
  • Avoid dust, animal hair etc.
  • No tobacco smoke.
  • Writing a diary to note any triggers that cause flare-ups.
Bathing:
  • Water temperature between 32° and 34° (lukewarm).
  • Showers are better. A short duration five-minute shower every day.
  • Turn the water off when washing.
  • For those who like baths and for children: add a liquid emollient to the bath to neutralize water hardness. 5-10 minutes at most to minimise the contact time with the municipal water.
  • Wash with soap-free products (dermatologist recommended) as the pH is closest to that of the skin and does not aggravate skin dryness.
  • Wash hair with dermatological shampoos that are soft or intended for frequent use.
  • Dry by patting, as rubbing reactivates itching. Leave the body wet after bathing.
Moisturization in atopic dermatitis:
  • 5-minute, lukewarm baths followed by the application of a moisturizer. (Dermatologist recommended).
  • Keep the moisturizer in the bathroom and apply all over the body while wet, to seal in moisture and allow water to be absorbed through the skin.
  • Moisturize 2-3 times a day.
  • Wash your hands before applying a moisturiser.
  • Apply a liberal amount of the moisturizer, warming it first between your hands, and apply in large circular movements. (Massage)
  • Do not apply an emollient on raw/ red skin
  • Do not rub the skin
When to contact a Dermatologist:
  • Condition not responding to moisturizers
  • Symptoms continue to worsen
  • There are signs of infection fever, redness, or pain).
